April 2022: Amazon Announces EPUB “Send to Kindle” Support + Removing MOBI In order to side-load an ebook file that you did not buy in the Kindle Store onto your Kindle, such as a reader magnet or advanced reader copy, you still had to have a MOBI file. This was huge news, as the MOBI file had been a huge staple of the KDP ebook-uploading process.
